This initiative was begun in 2009 as a collaborative effort with Holy Redeemer Health System, a local elementary school, the Master Gardener Program of the Penn State Extension, and the Sisters of the Redeemer in response to rising childhood obesity rates, the growing awareness of environmental sustainability and as a continuation of our agricultural heritage. The School Garden combines nutrition and environmental sustainability education, physical exercise, gardening skills and a lot of fun!
The school garden is a year-round program that includes Fall and Spring planting, greenhouse seed starting, classroom nutrition education during the winter months, and harvesting throughout the summer. Abundant produce is contributed to the Sisters’ food cupboards. Teachers, parents, Sisters and volunteers participate with the Second Grade Classes to make this garden possible.
